Creative Production Design

Big Squid was excited to be involved in the creation of a teaser for Alice Nelson during the early development phase of her first feature documentary, The Undermine.

Tracy’s role involved both set and prop making as well as providing hands-on production support on shoots. The creative process included building intricate, miniature paper sets and characters staged within 3D environments and filmed entirely in-camera.

Tracy was able to bring her computer animation skills to the teaser, creating realistic weather effects, which are among the only moving elements in the scenes, and seamlessly integrating these with in-camera footage. This work helped translate Alice’s early vision into a tangible visual proof of concept, supporting the continued development of the script and additional scenes.

Alice Nelson is an award-winning documentary filmmaker (BAFTA Scotland winner, Slamdance Best Short Documentary, Documentary Fortnight MoMA). Based at Summerhall, she developed the concept, script, and initial scenes of The Undermine.
